BLACKBERRY SCRATCH
In collaboration with Adam Blencowe

Blackberry Scratch is a new permanent artwork and public seat designed for the central green space at Blackberry Park. It responds to the industrial history of the local area; Coalpit Heath was founded as a coal mining settlement. The form of the artwork references the drumlin shape that often characterises areas where mining has occurred, and the name Blackberry Scratch refers to the technique of mining coal simply by scratching away the surface; this method was used locally around Coalpit Heath.

The tiles that line the seating were made by scratching, pushing and moving wet clay resulting in unequally textured surfaces. This process was specifically developed by us and made with local residents at Fired Up Ceramics’ studio in Yate.

The artwork was commissioned and funded by Barratt Homes for the Blackberry Park housing development and forms part of the developer’s planning obligations for the site.

Materials:Hand made ceramic tiles, corten steel, brick, cement and shaped earth.

PUSH

Push, is a do it yourself, low tech solution changing the way we use buttons in public space. Feeling useless and restless in lockdown, but with access to the workshop I set out to build a simple device that would prevent touching the same place as everyone else. Theoretically adding to the arsenal of things we can do to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. Although lockdown eases in some places, life and the use of public space won’t be the same for the foreseeable future. Until a form of herd immunity is in place we have to change the way we interact with our surroundings, especially in places where lots of people gather. Push activates the small button by hitting the large lever, this can be done with your knee, elbow, walking stick, or hip. Due to the difference in balancing it resets itself ready for the next pedestrian. Made with what I had available in the studio; an angle grinder, a welder, and some leftover 3mm mild steel sheets. This is a simple device easily manufactured at large or in small DIY making hubs. Push is specifically designed for the UK traffic light buttons, however, it could easily be adapted for other public buttons as well.

REDEFINE OUR PUBLIC SPACE

Redefine Our Public Space is a collection of products that reshapes and redefines our public space. By hacking well-known objects I want to show what is possible with what already exists. Simply attaching a bell to a lamppost transforms it into a landmark. More or less the same idea inspired my design for a fireplace insert, attachable to Holland’s most widespread public trashcan. Thanks to this design dull and derelict places become hangouts of choice and to the same object, I designed an attachment that makes a fire post into a fountain. It’s my strong belief that in a time of economic hardship and individual isolation we should address ourselves to public space as a collectively owned domain and explore possible ways to use it to our joint benefit.

The term public space somehow suggests that urban environments are open to our free use. The reality is that public space is over-regulated. There is little room for free use, no room for play. A serious obstacle is zoning or urban planning with the attached discussions on what is permissible where and the ambition to regulate on this for the long run. To make public space free and alife again I propose temporary intervention making short term use of the plastic possibilities of specific places.

PARK BENCH BUBBLE

The making process of this particular piece took place in Somerset (UK). In a Nissan hut, close to an old watermill. Together with a dozen other design students, we retreaded there for two weeks.

I like to communicate and spark debate about our current living environment, using objects that we can identify ourselves with. Parkbench Bubble is part of an ongoing investigation in topics like privacy, public space, essentialism, and the made environment. With the takedown of the RCA degree show, there are always loads of good materials up for grabs. This together with a beautiful place with inspiring people gave me the chance to materialise this thought about a semi-public cell that contains all present life essentials; A USB charger and a form of protection against the elements.

Making for me is like second nature. I like to make fast, one to one models. Once these objects are shaped they communicate back. When a certain angle is not right, it doesn’t feel good so it needs adjusting. I combined known and existing materials and techniques ranging from cabinet construction, woodworking, inflatable, sewing, and DIY electrics. I consider this a prototype of thought, and by doing so I propose a visualisation of what I experience around me.

CANOPYSTAIR In collaboration with Rob McIntyre

The Canopystair is a modular system of steps that can be attached without tools to form a spiral staircase around a tree trunk, allowing one to walk up into the canopy above. Lightweight and quick to assemble, The Canopystair has been carefully designed not to damage or mark the tree in any way. The Canopystair was conceived in 2015 when Robert McIntyre and I spent time in the Azores. The house where we were staying was near the seashore, a tall stone wall that surrounded the house cut off any view of it. Only by climbing a tree in the garden could we watch the sun setting across the ocean, and so we began to discuss ways of transforming a garden tree into a staircase, thus allowing us to walk and up and down easily and enjoy the view. During our final year at the RCA studying on the Design Products postgraduate program, we developed this concept and began to experiment with various prototypes. Testing out the Canopystair we realised that what we had created was something rather special, much more than just a means to a view. It felt that we had unlocked a gate to a secret garden and made a passageway to a secluded habitat. The forest canopy is the least explored ecosystem on earth, a cloud of life that we could now access unobtrusively.

BRICK AND BEAM

In collaboration with Adam Blencowe

Brick and Beam is a sideboard designed for the grand living room in a private residence in central London. The piece mirrors original decorative granite and marble elements found throughout the Georgian building.

In the improvised homes in Amsterdam where I grew up, shelves were often constructed using nothing else then some bricks and planks. In the search for a contemporary and less crude ‘brick,’ we found an abundance of granite and marble offcuts. These pieces that we too small for your standard countertop were bought and processed by a CNC water jet cutter. The clever triangular design locks the three-meter long extruded aluminum tubes and bricks together.

DISC JOCKEY CONSOLE
In collaboraiton with Adam Blencowe

Rietveld Remixed is a unique Disc Jockey Console, that houses record equipment and is mobile to easily be moved around the ground floor of our client's home. We developed a design inspired by the ‘Elling’ Sideboard of the late Gerrit Rietveld. A series of square, hexagonal, and circular rods and tubes conceal the cabling between the components. Underneath the cabinet a set of wheels allow movement and a brake can be applied when stationary.

SQUARE PEG STUDY
In collaboration with Adam Blencowe

The Square Peg study is a private study centered around a system of flexible shelving to accommodate a growing collection of books. Working with a palette of brass and Douglas Fir, the timber wall panels are perforated with 3 alternative shapes, so creating a decorative grid pattern. This is the foundation that allows for an almost infinite variation of shelving length and depth. Brass rods inserted into the holes both support timber shelves, and provide bookends. By doing this, interesting irregularities interrupt the grid and give a richness and spontaneity to the design. Plugs, light fittings, and switches are incorporated into the design by enlarging the openings and so integrating them into the whole. To complete the space a desk and day bed were fabricated with the same brass rods and Douglas Fir.

WELL MADE – Living with buildings, Rawminds

In collaboration with Adam Blencowe

Adam Blencowe and I were invited to design and manufacture an installation to showcase exhibits produced by young people for the ‘Living with Buildings’ exhibition at the Wellcome Collection. The design of the space and display needed to complement the other exhibit of the gallery, the Global Clinic, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners architects. Working alongside the Wellcome Collection team and RSHP architects, we curated the work to be shown as well as proposed its layout. We then designed a display system that allowed 2D and 3D works to be hung or shown on shelves at various heights. The furniture was made using CNC, a digitally controlled cutting process, the same method used for the clinic.
